Which pricing and profit calculator do I need?

Most of these tools start from the same few numbers — what something costs, what it sells for, and the costs that stay fixed regardless of volume. The difference is which question you are asking of them.

Markup and margin are the most commonly confused pair: both describe the same profit, but markup divides it by cost and margin divides it by selling price. Gross profit and contribution margin are also easy to mix up — gross profit subtracts cost of goods sold, while contribution margin subtracts the variable costs of each sale and feeds break-even analysis.

  • Know your cost and want a price? Cost → Markup Calculator → Selling Price Calculator.
  • Know both cost and selling price? Use the Profit Margin Calculator to see profit, margin and markup together.
  • Looking at a whole period's revenue and cost of goods sold? Use the Gross Profit Calculator.
  • Have fixed costs, a price and a variable cost per unit? Use the Break-Even Calculator to find the sales needed to cover them.
